Colombia's Secret Paradises
Colombia is still very unknown as a tourist destination by most foreign travelers, even though there are already well-established tourism hotspots. But there is even more: Many secret paradises to be discovered by national and international tourists. One of the reasons why there are so many hidden paradises in Colombia is that many tourist destinations within Colombia are still being developed and are not getting well-promoted. In the past, many attractions including National Parks were not accessible by tourists due to the presence of paramilitary groups and now many of those places are secure and can be visited for the first time.
With the improvement of infrastructure it will be possible to reach new places that have been hidden for many years. Especially those tourists who are interested in exotic places with high potential for ecotourism have a large choice of new nature-based tourist destinations in Colombia.
Capurganá and Sapzurro
One of the regions where you can find a lot of untouched natural beauty is the department of Chocó, a region with one of the highest biodiversity in the world. This region has a Pacific and Atlantic coastline with jungle in between and small villages rarely visited by tourists. One of Colombia’s hidden paradises we want to present here are the villages of Capurganá and Sapzurro, both situated on the Atlantic coast of Chocó just next to the border to Panamá. Only a few years ago this place couldn’t even be found on a map, now it can be reached directly by small planes from Medellin or by boat from Turbo.
Capurganá used to be home to the Cuna Indians which later settled to the region of Kuna Yala in Panamá. Now, most locals of Capurganá and Sapzurro are settlers from Cartagena.
A village free of motor vehicles
Nowadays, Capurganá is a village with eco-lodges, local restaurants, some souvenir shops and a lot of nature around waiting to be discovered. If you are tired of traffic jams and the noise of cars, Capurganá is the right place for you because there is not even one motor vehicle. Transportation is possible by horse-taxi, which is a unique experience. Just next to the village of Capurganà are beaches with crystal clear water and the possibility to experience the beautiful underwater world of the Caribbean. Diving and snorkeling are some of the main activities as well as bird watching and hiking.
Between Jungle and the Caribbean Sea
Both villages, Capurganá and Sapzurro, give you access to some of Colombia’s most stunning nature. No matter if you want to explore the tropical jungle or the Caribbean sea, you can do both. There are waterfalls such as the Cascada del Cielo, mangrove trees, lots of diving sites, and between January and June you can see the world’s largest turtles in La Playona.
Getting around is possible by horseback or by boat which allows you to visit different beaches and small islands, The Isla de los Pájaros, for example, is a small island with lots of birds. Some of the most beautiful beaches around Capurganá are El Aguacate and Playa Soledad. The places are very quiet and peaceful, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the nature.
Capurganá is waiting for you
Capurganá and Sapzurro are not only interesting for nature fans but also for people who want to know more about the locals and try their food in some of their small restaurants. It is a great place to forget about the stress of the city life and to be connected to nature.
